The Grand Cherokee continues to be one of the most popular and critically acclaimed SUVs on the market, and Jeep is quite proud of the fact that since it was launched, it has earned more industry awards than any other vehicle in its class. The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee arrives with refinements to its standard and optional equipment and a new 80th Anniversary package that will be available for this model year only. Jeep has also introduced some compelling new brand incentives, and you contact Don White’s Timonium Jeep to learn more about them. One of the popular alternatives to the Grand Cherokee is the Chevrolet Traverse. Join us as we compare the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs 2021 Chevrolet Traverse and see how to these vehicles measure up against one another.
Each vehicle has National and Regional that are included in the advertised internet price. There may be additional incentives for which you may qualify (conditional). Please add sales tax, MVA tag and title fees, destination charge, and $800 processing fee (not required by law).
Both the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the 2021 Chevrolet Traverse are midsize crossover utility vehicles. The Grand Cherokee has a 114.8-inch wheelbase and an 8.6-inch minimum ground clearance. The total length is 189.8 inches—about 15.8 feet. The Chevrolet Traverse, on the other hand, has a 120.9-inch wheelbase and a 7.5-inch minimum ground clearance. The total length is 205.9 inches—about 17.2 feet. Chevrolet opted for the larger form factor to accommodate a third row. Jeep opted for a more agile design. It is also notable that the Grand Cherokee provides the higher ground clearance and the taller driver position, which research shows is important to consumers who choose CUVs.
The Grand Cherokee is a five-passenger CUV. The Traverse is a seven-passenger CUV. If you strongly prefer the seven-passenger configuration, then we highly recommend comparing the Traverse to the new Grand Cherokee L. It is an extended-wheelbase version of this vehicle that can seat up to seven. Front legroom is similar in both models at more than 40 inches, but beyond the front row, you begin to make some sacrifices in order to have that additional seating. The Jeep model provides more than five additional inches of second-row legroom, which is substantial. It also provides you with 36.3 cubic feet of dedicated cargo space. The Traverse is only able to provide 23.0 cubic feet of dedicated space.
Both the Jeep and Chevrolet feature a base 3.6L V6 engine that delivers more than 300 horsepower and more than 260 pound-feet of torque. Jeep pairs its V6 with an eight-speed automatic transmission whereas Chevrolet opts for a nine-speed automatic. Chevrolet offers front-wheel and four-wheel drive. Jeep offers rear-wheel and four-wheel drive. The above powertrain is the only one offered for the Traverse. Jeep provides additional options for drivers who want more performance. Starting with the Trailhawk trim, the Grand Cherokee features a V8 engine that makes 360 hp and 390 lb.-ft. The SRT has a more powerful 470-hp V8 engine, and the Trackhawk has even more powerful 707-hp engine. Max towing for the Grand Cherokee ranges from 3,500 to 7,200 pounds. Max towing for the Traverse ranges from 1,500 to 5,000 pounds, and only the high-end High Country can actually reach the upper limit.
Both Jeep and Chevrolet have opted for a 7-inch color HD infotainment touchscreen with a rearview monitoring system and integrated Apple and Android smartphone support. The Jeep model does have an advantage in that the Uconnect infotainment is widely regarded among the most feature-rich and user-friendly implementations. Another win for Jeep is that it includes a standard suite of driver-assistance tech. This includes blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-path detection. Both automakers add more tech as you go up in trim levels, but Jeep tends to adds these features earlier in the lineup.
