For those not familiar with the Wrangler 4xe, it is a plug-in hybrid vehicle and the first hybrid Wrangler ever manufactured. Those that do know about it have been asking us many questions, which motivated us to create this 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe review to cover the most common. All Wrangler 4xe models are based on the four-door Wrangler Ultimate, and there are currently three trims available. The base model is the Wrangler Sahara 4xe. There is the up-level Wrangler Rubicon 4xe, and finally, you have the High Altitude, which is based on the Wrangler Rubicon 4xe but includes many of the options available on that trim at a reduced price.

CloseThe Wrangler 4xe looks a lot like a standard Rubicon Ultimate. One way that you can tell them are the electric blue accents that are exclusive to the Wrangler 4xe. Otherwise, the Wrangler 4xe is similar to other Wrangler models. The wheelbase is 118.4 inches, and the standard minimum ground clearance is 10.8 inches. The vehicle measures 188.4 inches long, 73.8 inches wide and 73.6 inches tall. Jeep offers more than a dozen body color options. The wheels are aluminum, and sizes range from 18 to 20 inches. You also have all of the exterior options, such as body-colored fenders and a range of hard tops and soft tops.
The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe has four doors and two rows, and it seats up to five. The driver and front passenger are afforded 42.6 inches of headroom and 41.2 inches of legroom. Passengers in the rear seat can also stretch out thanks to 38.3 inches of legroom. The dedicated cargo area behind the rear seat is impressive at 31.7 cubic feet. You can also fold the back seat for up to 72.4 cubes.
The Wrangler 4xe features a PHEV powertrain that can distribute power to two wheels or all four wheels depending on the need. This system can be automatic or dictated by the driver. In a clever nod, Jeep has replaced legendary 4×4 badging with Wrangler 4xe. Mechanical features of the Wrangler 4xe include a two-speed transfer case, electronic sway bars that can disconnect and front and rear locking differentials.
The plug-in hybrid system in the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe combines a 2.0L turbocharged gas engine, dual electric motor-generators, a battery pack and an eight-speed automatic transmission. This configuration combines for an impressive 375 hp and 470 lb.-ft. of torque. The battery pack is situated under the second-row seating. One electric motor-generator is located near the front axle. The other is located near the transmission and rear axle. This setup allows the Wrangler 4xe to power all four wheels when the extra traction is needed, but when it is not, it can power just two wheels for the improved fuel economy. The Wrangler 4xe can haul up to 1,280 pounds and, with the available trailering equipment, tow up to 3,500 pounds.
All Wrangler 4xe models have the Uconnect 4 infotainment software with an 8.4-inch touch-display, a rearview camera system, voice control, Bluetooth, a built-in navigation system, Android and Apple device integration and many other bells and whistles. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic detection and a rear parking assistance system are standard with the High Altitude and optional with the other trims. All trims also offer an advanced suite of driver assistance and convenience technologies: adaptive cruise control, full-speed collision detection and warning, automatic emergency braking and more.
